North River Tugboat Museum

North River Tugboat Museum Working boats, saved and restored

We raise, restore and keep the tugboats and barges that worked the river, so the people who see them can understand how they were built and how they were run.

What we do

These boats are worth more afloat and explained than rusting on the bottom.

Raising sunken vessels

Some of our boats came to us from the bottom of the river. Bringing them up is slow, careful work, documented from first survey to final lift.

Restoration

Once a hull is up, the long work begins: cleaning, repairing, and putting back the details that make each boat what it was, including Pennsylvania Railroad Barge No. 399.

Sharing the story

We record each restoration in photographs and video, so anyone can follow a boat's journey from wreck to working vessel again.
